How does VR bring the ocean closer to us?
A closer look at how virtual reality technology can be used to explore the underwater world.
For many of us, the ocean remains a distant and largely unexplored world. However, Virtual Reality (VR) makes it possible to experience different environments in an immersive way without having to be physically present.
More importantly, through storytelling, VR bridges the gap between us and the ocean. By making these experiences more accessible, linking it to relevant storylines, people are able to move beyond passive observers to active participants, creating a stronger impact and emotional connection to the ocean.

Secrets of the Blue
Secrets of the Blue is a free-roaming immersive VR adventure that is part of Science Centre’s ONE Ocean exhibition. Guided by Yellow, a spirited underwater drone, visitors get to embark on a free-roaming VR journey through kelp forests, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and a vibrant coral reef before Yellow's shrinking device transports them into the microscopic world of plankton.

What makes this experience special?
For those who have a deep fear of the ocean or have never had the opportunity to dive, this is the safest and most accessible way to explore the ocean. It also serves as an engaging and meaningful way for visitors to understand more about our marine ecosystem and how our actions affect the ocean.
The experience can also be especially meaningful for older children. Through active exploration, this experience allows them to better grasp and understand marine concepts, fostering curiosity, learning and awareness. What better way is there to learn than a fun high-tech adventure?

As technology continues to evolve, VR is no longer simply just for entertainment, but rather a tool that allows more accessibility for people to better understand the impacts of human actions on the ocean and how deeply connected we are to it. Imagine being transported right in front of a bleached coral reef and seeing microplankton up close.
